When art is created in three dimensions, materials and settings are parts of the effect.
Works can highlight aspects of natural substances – the grain and shapes in wood, texture in bone, color and coarseness of stones or types of clay.
Some works include motion, as in flowing water, or sound as wind blows through, or changes as sunlight varies in the course of a day.
The effects can be associative or symbolic, including eggs or dead leaves, natural objects shaped like tears, or using wood from a favorite tree to make a bowl.
With these and other effects, sculpture can prompt us to see qualities and consider meaning in natural things.
