Online communities

Online groupThe most active groups that are currently exploring a religious naturalist orientation exist mainly as online communities. Groups host websites, which provide information and links and communications from group leaders. They may also host online conversation – where participants share thoughts regarding the natural world, religious concepts, spiritual practices, and any other topics they may choose to discuss.

A discussion of what occurs at one such online forum is described in a chapter, Bringing religious naturalists together online, in the Routledge Handbook of Religious Naturalism”.

At their best, online conversations offer an exchange of information and ideas that can enable in-depth exploration of questions relating to RN, with input from voices with varied perspectives. Many appreciate this as being more active than the role of parishioners in pews, and how, through ongoing conversation, they can come to “know” some virtual partners well.

At times, online conversations can lead to in-person gatherings – where those in local areas choose to get together – or in association with events (for example, in meeting before or after a rally in support of ecologic protection or a talk on a topic of interest). Also, online groups may sponsor lectures, classes, conferences or other events; or they may inform members of in-person gatherings that are sponsored by other groups.

Some online communities that are primarily, or partially, focused on topics related to religious naturalism can be explored via links shown below.
